New Riso Prints

Cloud Whale by Kate Austin

It has been ages since I have done a proper blog update!

Cannot believe how quickly time goes by when you’re working away, not to mention travelling like crazy. This year has been incredible as far as travelling goes- to many wonderful faraway places- I swam in the Atlantic and the Pacific, and a few spots in between as well. I even got to leave this continent and spend some time in England when the roses were blooming everywhere- that was a very special treat. I’ve been keeping up with instagram and many of my travels are well documented here. Now I’m grounded in my studio in the balmiest Canadian December I can recall getting ready for my first time exhibiting at PrintSource, a pattern trade show in NYC in January. Exciting!

I’ve been busy making new patterns and also working on my illustration portfolio. This week I was thrilled to launch two new risograph prints in my Etsy shop (click here to get there fast!) : “Cloud Whale” (pictured above)and “Seedling to Blossom” (pictured here)

I also have sorted out that pesky missing V from my alphabet and that print is now available as well. We are finding that print very handy around our house, as the little one is learning his letters and loves to show us when he’s got another one down pat. The pictures are little clues to help figure out what’s what.

Happy Friday!!

Yesterday I picked up some beautiful fluroescent pink and cornflower blue risograph Alphabet posters I designed- printed by the awesome Colour Code Print studio here in Toronto. Today I set up virtual shop! Check them out– the colours are so vibrant. See if you can figure out what I chose for each letter! There’s only a couple of goodies available right now, but there will be more soon– stay tuned!

Happy Spring: the lookbook!

I’m so excited to present my first-ever surface pattern lookbook!

This is just a nibble into my new collection of surface patterns, launching in a few short days at Surtex NYC. I wanted to share my love of summery days by the sea– many pics from my travels to Nova Scotia and New England made it into this wee book! I hope you enjoy this little offering… it was so fun to make!!

april showers

Hooray!

I have sent off my booth fabric, my illustration portfolio and my lookbook for printing– all to bring to Surtex in May. Phew!! So today I celebrated and made a new pattern. I’ve been working on this one for a while, in my spare time, and I’m so happy with it I thought I would share a sneak peek! It’s very timely- April has been fully bringing the showers (including hail!) for the past few days. I have to remind myself of the May flowers at the other end of these dreary, cold, no-fun-for-biking days. Drawing this pattern also helped offset the grey outside. Plus there’s totally some green out there FINALLY, and my daffodils even bloomed so things are definitely looking up!!

Daily Postcard Project

jan 27, 2015

jan 27, 2015

I wanted to write about a project I started recently- something I have been thinking about and doing here and there for a while. I am deeply inspired by the work of Katsuji Wakisaka, a textile designer with Sou Sou. His textiles are beautiful and open and joyful- and colorful of course! He has spent years creating a postcard every day, many of which (all of which?) end up being textile patterns. I love the discipline and routine of this project, and the looseness within the confines of the format. So, once I was all settled in my new studio (!!) (a sunny sublet until May) I decided to go for it, and get down to business with the daily postcard project. I went out and got me some giant pieces of delicious Stonehenge paper, set to work with my trusty bone folder and ripped them up into perfect postcard sized paper canvasses- good to go! I’ve been documenting the work over at instagram- check out my feed!– and although I did miss a week there being out of commission with a flu type deal, I am feeling so energized and excited about this work. I really love the opportunity to explore some random subject everyday- and to draw and paint a bit too!!

Orange and Grape Pop Explosion

I’m having a moment with a riff on one of my all time favourite colour combinations: orange and pink. This time it’s orange and grape. A pink so fuschia it’s almost purple. I came up with this pattern thinking about those crazy pop rock candies – this is what I imagine happens inside the mouth of the pop rocks eater. There’s lots of little explosions and then occasional whoppers. I would love to have a chair fully upholstered in velvet with this pattern, and I would definitely enjoy lounging in that chair in my corduroy skirt and jacket in the same pattern. Eating a creamsicle, drinking grape juice, and reading a book covered in this pattern of course!!!

Hello! I’m back from a lovely time in the wilds of Algonquin park- more on this later. While I was away I got word that my piece on COLOUR and what it means to me was chosen for the current issue of Uppercase Magazine, #22. And what an issue it looks to be- I cant wait to get my copy in the mail!! There’s some great preview tidbits here including a video with lots of tantalizing and colorful pictures. My piece along with my photo of bright and fuzzy yarns is in the top right corner of the above spread… pretty nifty! This magazine is so great- it’s really hefty and jam-packed with awesome art, craft, and design goodness. I am a subscriber, and I recommend it to all!!!!
