the world in black and white

seaweed by kate austin designs

we went to nova scotia for a holiday this summer, and i find the instant i breathe that salty air i am overwhelmingly inspired. for the zillionth time i was so blown away by seaweed – all the variety knocked my socks off, plus each one was an amazing form and colour- not to mention texture! i did some drawing while i was there of stuff on the beaches where we stayed- sand dollars, kelp, shells, rocks, sand and i found very pleasing patterns fitting all the shapes together. this is the white on black version which i really love– though i am also excited to introduce some colour too. here too is one of my initial sketches done up in gouache- dark teal on a hot limey background in this case
